The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants” – Gichin Funakoshi
TRADITIONAL OKINAWA KARATE (ARIZONA)
SEIYO-KAI SHORIN-RYU KARATE
World Federation of Traditional Karate & Kobudo
Gilbert, Arizona
Seiyo Kai Shorin-Ryu Karate is a traditional form of Okinawan karate & self-defense. We work to improve our students' self-respect, self-esteem & confidence. Seiyo Kai is a powerful and pragmatic martial art.
Members compete only with themselves. Those who desire competition are assisted in training & we work closely with them to keep their focus, but we are traditional rather sport. Even so, we have regional, national, and international champions. Of the members who competed up to 2007, 97% earned gold, silver or bronze medals. We are equally proud of our members who earn their obi (ranks) and recognition through various scholastic programs.
Karate is self-defense with zen (or philosophy). Without philosophy, tradition and positive improvement of the individual, it can not be classified as martial art.
Kobudo is the ancient practice of martial arts weapons. Members learn traditional weapons that include nunchaku, tonfa (batons), kama (sickles), sai, surichin (weighted rope), manriki (chain), kuwa (hoe), tsue (cane), katana (sword), naginata (halberd), yari (spear), bo (6-foot staff), hanbo (3-foot staff), kioga (expandable baton), kobutan (short stick), nitan bo (two sticks), etc.
Seiyo Shorin-Ryu emphasizes kata (forms) and bunkai (applications). We have >70 forms that are practiced with applications. Each move in every kata is understood by our students so that kata can be used to practice self-defense. We work on focus to develop one-punch knockouts. However, we emphasize dojo kun which includes kara te ni sente nashi translating as 'there is no first attack in karate' as karate is used only for self-defense and self-improvement.
Our Grandmaster (Soke) is a 10th dan red belt (10th degree black belt)with more than 45 years experience in karate and certifications in 18 martial arts. Soke has been inducted into 14 Halls of Fame and trained students from all over the world. He taught at the University of Wyoming, University of New Mexico, University of Utah and Arizona State University in the past.
